that game again features bisque-fired terracotta installed on a sand substrate. Its forms and titles reference the child’s game of tic-tac-toe, but there’s an odd number of pieces, rendering the game futile. The project is the latest manifestation of my works in cyanotype, wherein I use the bisqued terra cotta forms to filter waste water generated in the cyanotype production process. This light-sensitive liquid precipitates into the clay, forming deep, Prussian-blue deposits on the vessels’ inner rims. The careful observer might have noticed how Prussian blue blooms along the western face of an X-shaped vessel throughout the exhibition, or how the turquoise liquid in the more northerly spiral swirled cerulean when disturbed. These haphazard filtration stations compress the relationship between earth and sky, the respective vehicles of their making, into a yet-puzzling material inquiry that identifies more questions than it answers. Their sand substrate reveals the intermittent tending that has occurred throughout the week, capturing the residue of my footfalls. This emulsion in particular resulted from the recent spring equinox in March 2024.
